Central to the story and to the design of The Writer was the “sacred” space of the theatre and so we embraced the studio venue and did not mask or hide the mechanics of the show. A central, permanent platform allowed the characters to be aware of their audience and the set, or to be on the stage, caught up in the world of the play. There was a cast of four, with characters reappearing through the show as various versions of themselves.
